To reach the tidal bench marks from Highway 101 in Santa Barbara, exit SW on
State Street at a traffic light on the freeway, then follow State Street to
Stearns Wharf.  The bench marks are located in the vicinity of the wharf and
along Cabrillo Boulevard.  The tide gage and staff were located at the south end
of the wharf.

railing on the SE side of the Cabrillo Boulevard bridge over an outlet of
Mission Creek, 312 feet (95 m) NE of the center of the T junction of State
Street and Cabrillo Boulevard, 52.5 feet (16.0 m) SE of the centerline of
Cabrillo Boulevard, and 4 feet (1 m) above the sidewalk.

The bench mark is set in top of a round concrete end post at the NE end of the
sea wall and close to the point where the sea wall reaches the SW line of State
Street Pier, 0.2 mile (0.3 km) SE of the Southern Pacific Railroad Station, 59
feet (18 m) SE of the centerline of Cabrillo Boulevard and on the SW side of
State Street, 44 feet (13 m) SW of the centerline of the concrete approach to
the wooden pier of Stearns Wharf, and 1.5 feet (0.5 m) above the sidewalk.

the concrete walkway, and 0.5 foot (0.2 m) below ground level.

on the north side of Cabrillo Boulevard, at the west end of the abutment, 0.4
mile (0.6 km) NW of Stearns Wharf, 200 feet (61 m) SE of the SE rail of the
railroad track, 35.5 feet (10.8 m) north of the centerline of Cabrillo
Boulevard, and 0.5 foot (0.2 m) above the boulevard.

The bench mark is located 375 feet (114 m) ENE of the Santa Barbara Railroad
Station, 98 feet (30 m) ENE of the centerline of State Street, 18 feet (5 m)
south of the south wall of an adobe red tile-roofed building, 14.5 feet (4.4 m)
north of the northernmost track of the main railroad line, and 1.7 feet (0.5 m)
east of a metal witness post.  The bench mark is 0.2 foot (0.1 m) below ground
level, crimped to a copper-clad steel rod driven 56 feet (17 m), and encased in
a 4-inch PVC pipe.

The bench mark is located in a lawn on the SE side of Cabrillo Boulevard between
State Street and Santa Barbara Street, 264 feet (80 m) SW of the extended
centerline of Santa Barbara Street, 107.0 feet (32.6 m) west of a light standard
in the center of a parking lot, 67 feet (20 m) SE of the centerline of Cabrillo
Boulevard, 39.1 feet (11.9 m) SW of the intersection of a sidewalk and the
concrete walkway leading into the parking lot, 21.8 feet (6.6 m) SE of the
second street light SW of Santa Barbara Street and on the sidewalk adjacent to
Cabrillo Boulevard.  The bench mark is 0.3 foot (0.1 m) below ground level,
crimped to a copper-clad steel rod driven 48 feet (15 m), and encased in a
4-inch PVC pipe.

                             D E F I N I T I O N S


Mean Sea Level (MSL) is a tidal datum determined over a 19-year National Tidal
Datum Epoch.  It pertains to local mean sea level and should not be confused
with the fixed datums of North American Vertical Datum of 1988 (NAVD88).

NAVD88 is a fixed datum derived from a simultaneous, least squares, minimum
constraint adjustment of Canadian/Mexican/United States leveling observations.
Local mean sea level observed at Father Point/Rimouski, Canada was held fixed as
the single initial constraint.  NAVD88 replaces NGVD29 as the national
standard geodetic reference for heights.  Bench mark elevations relative to
NAVD88 are available from NGS through the World Wide Web at 
National Geodetic Survey.

NGVD29 is a fixed datum adopted as a national standard geodetic reference for
heights but is now considered superseded.  NGVD29 is sometimes referred to as
Sea Level Datum of 1929 or as Mean Sea Level on some early issues of Geological
Survey Topographic Quads.  NGVD29 was originally derived from a general
adjustment of the first-order leveling networks of the U.S. and Canada after
holding mean sea level observed at 26 long term tide stations as fixed.
Numerous local and wide-spread adjustments have been made since establishment in
1929.  Bench mark elevations relative to NGVD29 are available from the National
Geodetic Survey (NGS) data base via the World Wide Web at 
National Geodetic Survey.

NAVD88 and NGVD29 are fixed geodetic datums whose elevation relationships to
local MSL and other tidal datums may not be consistent from one location to
another.

The Vertical Mark Number (VM#) and PID# shown on the bench mark sheet are unique
identifiers for bench marks in the tidal and geodetic databases, respectively.
Each bench mark in either database has a single, unique VM# and/or PID# assigned.
Where both VM# and PID# are indicated, both tidal and geodetic elevations are
available for the bench mark listed.

The NAVD88 elevation is shown on the Elevations of Tidal Datums Table Referred
to MLLW only when two or more of the bench marks listed have NAVD88 elevations.
The NAVD88 elevation relationship shown in the table is derived from an average
of several bench mark elevations relative to tide station datum.  As a result of
this averaging, NAVD88 bench mark elevations computed indirectly from the tidal
datums elevation table may differ slightly from NAVD88 elevations listed for
each bench mark in the NGS database.
