To reach the tidal bench marks from the junction of the east end of the U.S.
Highway 50 bridge and Philadelphia Avenue in Ocean City, proceed south on
Philadelphia Avenue for 0.2 mile (0.3 km) to Wicomico Street, turn left onto
Wicomico Street and continue east to Ocean City Fishing Pier.  The bench marks
are near the pier, on Dorchester Street, and at the U.S. Coast Guard Station. 
The tide gage and electric tape gage are at the offshore end of the pier.

The primary bench mark is set vertically in the NE brick face of the Police
Department building on the south side of Dorchester Street between Baltimore and
Philadelphia Avenues, 23.8 feet   (7.3 m) SW of the centerline of Dorchester
Street, 21.0 feet     (6.4 m) NW of the centerline of the entrance to the police
building, 10.3 feet (3.1 m) SE of the centerline of a driveway, 1.0 foot (0.3 m)
SE of the NW corner of the building, and 2.2 feet (0.7 m) above the ground.

The bench mark is set flush in the NW corner of a concrete chimney foundation
for a four-story boarding house on the south side of Somerset Street at
Baltimore Avenue, 32.7 feet (10.0 m) SW of the centerline of Somerset Street,
5.9 feet (1.8 m) WSW of the NW corner of the house, 0.6 foot (0.2 m) NW of the
NW corner of the chimney, and 1.1 feet (0.3 m) above the ground.

Wicomico Street, 4.8 feet (1.5 m) east of the NE corner of Bearded Clam Bar, and
level with the ground.

(3.0 m) north of the NE corner of Buds Deli and the NW corner of Dolles candy
shop, and 2.5 feet (0.8 m) above the ground.

the SW corner of a passageway to the boardwalk, 85.4 feet (26.0 m) east of the
centerline of the boardwalk, 73.3 feet (22.3 m) north of the north curb of the
parking lot, 25.4 feet (7.7 m) north of the NW corner of a concrete block
building on the pier, 10.0 feet (3.0 m) SSW of the centerline of the pier, 1.1
feet (0.3 m) SE of the bottom step to the second story of the pier, and level
with the ground.

The bench mark is on the north side of the U.S. Coast Guard Station on
Worchester Street and Philadelphia Avenue, 132.1 feet (40.3 m) north of the NW
corner of the Coast Guard building, 30.0 feet (9.1 m) WNW of the centerline of a
drive to the Coast Guard station, 27.0 feet (8.2 m) SW of the centerline of
Worchester Street, 1.4 feet (0.4 m) SW of a concrete block wall, and 1.2 feet
(0.4 m) east of the NE corner of a chain link fence.  The bench mark is level
with ground, crimped to a stainless steel rod driven an unspecified depth to
refusal, and encased in a 4-inch PVC pipe and concrete kickblock.

The bench mark is on the south side of the U.S. Coast Guard Station, 93.4 feet
(28.5 m) SE of the east leg of a steel radio tower, 62.3 feet (19.0 m) SSW of
the SW corner of the Coast Guard barracks, 15.2 feet (4.6 m) NNE of the SE
corner of a chain link fence, 4.4 feet (1.3 m) WSW of the chain link fence, and
1.2 feet (0.4 m) NNE of a wooden antenna pole.  The bench mark is 0.3 foot (0.1
m) below the ground, crimped to a stainless steel rod driven an unspecified
depth to refusal, and encased in a 4-inch PVC pipe and concrete kickblock.

                             D E F I N I T I O N S


Mean Sea Level (MSL) is a tidal datum determined over a 19-year National Tidal
Datum Epoch.  It pertains to local mean sea level and should not be confused
with the fixed datums of North American Vertical Datum of 1988 (NAVD88).

NAVD88 is a fixed datum derived from a simultaneous, least squares, minimum
constraint adjustment of Canadian/Mexican/United States leveling observations.
Local mean sea level observed at Father Point/Rimouski, Canada was held fixed as
the single initial constraint.  NAVD88 replaces NGVD29 as the national
standard geodetic reference for heights.  Bench mark elevations relative to
NAVD88 are available from NGS through the World Wide Web at 
National Geodetic Survey.

NGVD29 is a fixed datum adopted as a national standard geodetic reference for
heights but is now considered superseded.  NGVD29 is sometimes referred to as
Sea Level Datum of 1929 or as Mean Sea Level on some early issues of Geological
Survey Topographic Quads.  NGVD29 was originally derived from a general
adjustment of the first-order leveling networks of the U.S. and Canada after
holding mean sea level observed at 26 long term tide stations as fixed.
Numerous local and wide-spread adjustments have been made since establishment in
1929.  Bench mark elevations relative to NGVD29 are available from the National
Geodetic Survey (NGS) data base via the World Wide Web at 
National Geodetic Survey.

NAVD88 and NGVD29 are fixed geodetic datums whose elevation relationships to
local MSL and other tidal datums may not be consistent from one location to
another.

The Vertical Mark Number (VM#) and PID# shown on the bench mark sheet are unique
identifiers for bench marks in the tidal and geodetic databases, respectively.
Each bench mark in either database has a single, unique VM# and/or PID# assigned.
Where both VM# and PID# are indicated, both tidal and geodetic elevations are
available for the bench mark listed.

The NAVD88 elevation is shown on the Elevations of Tidal Datums Table Referred
to MLLW only when two or more of the bench marks listed have NAVD88 elevations.
The NAVD88 elevation relationship shown in the table is derived from an average
of several bench mark elevations relative to tide station datum.  As a result of
this averaging, NAVD88 bench mark elevations computed indirectly from the tidal
datums elevation table may differ slightly from NAVD88 elevations listed for
each bench mark in the NGS database.
